It was not Pedro Gomez but a different reporter sent here by the TV bigwigs in Bristol, Conn. In rapid fire, he asked manager Felipe Alou several variations of the tired question about dealing with a Barry Bonds distraction, this time a possible federal indictment.
"To tell you the truth, I don't give a s -- about it," Alou said sternly. Then, pointing toward the clubhouse, he said, "I don't think the average guy in there gives a s -- about it either."
Moments later, Alou smiled and said, "ESPN is back." So are the New York Times, the MLB.com reporter assigned to cover Bonds and the local TV sportscasters, all at China Basin on Friday night to begin a ghoulish re-enactment of the Bonds watch that preceded his 714th home run. Only this time, Bonds' potential prize is a date with a federal jury.
