The Giants could make a gallant run on old legs to the playoffs. Or they could break down in the carpool lane.
This could be the final three months of the Barry Bonds era. Or Bonds could sign on again for one more run at Hank Aaron.
However this season plays out both on the field and off it, the Giants are sure to be a much different team in 2007. There are 10 free agents on the roster, and it's hard to imagine GM Brian Sabean re-signing more than two or three.

This also could be the final chapter in Felipe Alou's long association with the Giants. There is mutual-option language for the 71-year-old manager to return next season, but owner Peter Magowan has said the club's performance would be a factor in whether Alou comes back for a fifth year. That's a far cry from the cordial, open invitation that Magowan had handed Alou the previous two winters
