Jason Schmidt didn't mind that he sat out the All-Star Game. It'll give him a week's rest between starts, and he's all for that.

"The more time, the better," the Giants' right-hander said Tuesday. "I had a big first half, innings-wise and pitch-count-wise. As for the team, having four days off will serve us better than any other team in the division. That's been our biggest obstacle, keeping all our old bodies healthy."

Schmidt, who'll likely pitch Sunday against the Phillies, following starts by Matt Morris and Noah Lowry, would benefit from a solid second half in two ways: He'd improve the Giants' chances of reaching the postseason, and he'd help his cause as he approaches free agency.
