To this day, Felipe Alou carries a grudge for having to bust his back as a minor-league manager for 12 years before he finally got promoted. After his 1,000th win as a major-league manager Monday night, Alou's words were understated. However, one must read between the lines to understand how much this means to him.
"For me, it's another gift from God, because I was 57 when I started managing in the big leagues," Alou said after the Giants beat the Colorado Rockies 9-6. "Not only that, I was named an interim manager in Montreal. After that, I was going to be evaluated after the season.
"I know many guys who have won 2,000. For me, this is a small gift that I want to dedicate to my friends, my family and my country."
