Padres' bats can't back Peavy
Quote:
SAN DIEGO -- Hiroki Kuroda allowed one run over 5 2/3 innings and teammate James Loney drove in two runs Monday as the Los Angeles Dodgers defeated the San Diego Padres, 4-1, before a sold-out crowd at PETCO Park.
Kuroda (1-0) limited the Padres to two hits over the first four innings before loading the bases in the fifth inning with two outs. Reliever Cory Wade came into the game and got Kevin Kouzmanoff to ground out to end the inning.
Pitching in front of the largest crowd in PETCO Park history (45,496), Kuroda walked one and struck out two.
San Diego pitcher Jake Peavy, who went into Monday's game with a 13-1 career mark against the Dodgers, including 11 consecutive victories, yielded a two-run single in the first inning to Loney and later a solo home run to Matt Kemp in the seventh inning.
Peavy (0-1) allowed three earned runs on seven hits over seven innings. He walked two and struck out eight.
The Padres got a run in the bottom of the first inning on a Brian Giles groundout that allowed Jody Gerut, who doubled to start the inning, to score from third base.
