Padres Acquire Rob Mackowiak, Wilfredo Ledezma, and Morgan Ensberg
Quote:
SAN DIEGO -- The Padres addressed some areas of need Tuesday as they made three deals before the non-waiver trading deadline to upgrade their 25-man roster for the final two months of the season.
San Diego acquired veteran third baseman Morgan Ensberg from Astros, infielder/outfielder Rob Mackowiak from White Sox, plus left-handed pitchers Wilfredo Ledezma and Will Startup from the Braves.
The Padres acquired the 31-year-old Ensberg and cash considerations from the Astros for cash considerations and a player to be named.
Ensberg was hitting .232 with eight home runs and 31 RBIs in 85 games for the Astros before he was designated for assignment last week. In 673 career games over seven seasons with Houston, Ensberg hit .266 with 105 home runs and 335 RBI.
In 2005, Ensberg finished fourth in the National League MVP voting after hitting .283 with 36 home runs and 101 RBIs. He also made his first All-Star Game appearance that season.
It's unclear on how the Padres will use Ensberg, as rookie third baseman Kevin Kouzmanoff has received the majority of starts at the hot corner.
In a move to strengthen their bench, the Padres acquired Mackowiak from the Chicago White Sox for Minor League pitcher Jon Link.
The left-handed-hitting Mackowiak, 31, was hitting .278 with the White Sox with six home runs and 36 RBI in 237 at-bats this season.
Mackowiak, a career .264 over seven Major League seasons, has played first base, third base and the outfield this season. He's also played second base during his career, though not since 2005.
Mackowiak will likely see time in the outfield, since the Padres released Russell Branyan last week.
