BRIDGEWATER — On Jan. 22, Terry Francona will get the chance to experience a night few Americans can only dream of.
The Boston Red Sox manager and New Brighton High School graduate and his wife, Jacque, have been invited to dinner at the White House. Red Sox third baseman Mike Lowell is also on the guest list of President Bush, a one-time baseball executive as president of the Texas Rangers.
“It’s going to be very special,” Francona said.
While Francona is understandably excited about the big night in Washington, he also isn’t sure it will match up to what he experienced Sunday night.
A crowd of more than 350 crammed into the banquet room of Jeffries Landing for a dinner honoring Francona for winning his second World Series title in four years last October when the Red Sox swept the Colorado Rockies. The dinner was sponsored by the New Brighton Boosters.
“I can’t imagine there will be another night during the entire off-season, including the trip to the White House, any more special that this,” Francona said at the conclusion of the affair. “Everything was just so heartfelt, to sit here and listen to the people you grew up with tell funny stories about you but also say such heartwarming things is just very, very special.
