The Pittsburgh Pirates today announced their schedule for the 2008 season. The Bucs are slated to begin the 2008 campaign on Monday, March 31 in Atlanta. Following a six-game road trip to Atlanta and Florida, Pittsburgh will return home for a six-game homestand. The home opener is scheduled for Monday, April 7, against the Chicago Cubs at 1:35 p.m. The Pirates, who also face the Cincinnati Reds during the first homestand, have not faced the Cubs in their Home Opener since 1990.
The Pirates will welcome two American League clubs to Pittsburgh for the first time since interleague play began in 1997. Pittsburgh will host the New York Yankees from June 24-26 for the first time since Game Seven of the 1960 World Series at Forbes Field. In addition, the Toronto Blue Jays will also make their first visit to the city of Pittsburgh for a three-game series from June 20-22. Pittsburgh will also host the Tampa Bay Devil Rays in the final weekend of interleague play from June 27-29.
Pittsburgh, who played two exhibition games in 1993 and captured the 1979 World Series title in Baltimore, will make its first regular season trip there for a weekend series from June 13-15 and the Bucs will also take on the White Sox in Chicago in a three-game set from June 17-19.
Pittsburgh's two longest homestands will each consist of 10 games. The Pirates will be home from June 3-12 to face Houston (June 3-5), Arizona (June 6-9) and Washington (June 10-12). Pittsburgh will also host St. Louis (September 12-14), Los Angeles (September 15-18) and Houston (September 19-21) in the final homestand of the 2008 campaign. The Pirates will end the season with a six-game road trip to Milwaukee and San Diego.
