Phils re-sign Jayson Werth
The Phillies reduced their number of players eligible for salary arbitration by one when they agreed to a one-year contract with outfielder Jayson Werth yesterday.
Werth, 27, will make $1.7 million in 2008, up from $850,000 in 2007.
Werth bounced back nicely last season after missing all of 2006 with a wrist injury. In 94 games, he hit .298, with a .404 on-base percentage, eight homers and 49 RBIs.
He hit .329 over the final 52 games of the season, with a .438 on-base percentage and 39 RBIs.
Werth, who can play all three outfield positions, is expected to see significant time in right field this season, possibly as part of a platoon with newly acquired Geoff Jenkins.
The signing of Werth left the Phils with four players eligible for arbitration: Ryan Howard, Ryan Madson, Brad Lidge and Eric Bruntlett.
Arbitration figures are due to be exchanged on Jan. 18, and hearings, if needed, will take place the first three weeks of February.
