Default Huge raise on the way for Howard

Should they sign Ryan Howard to a long-term contract?

The slugging first baseman is among five Phillies who are eligible to file for salary arbitration from Saturday through Jan. 15. Based on his 2007 numbers (47 home runs, 136 RBIs), Howard will receive a sizable raise through arbitration from his $900,000 salary last season.

He can't become a free agent until after the 2011 season, so there is little urgency for the Phillies to further extend his contract.

That doesn't mean they won't.
