Except for a little hiccup in the first inning - a three-run homer by Rod Barajas - Gio Gonzalez was terrific in his major-league debut.
But as anyone who follows the team knows, a three-run lead is too much for Oakland to overcome these days. The A's eventually fell 5-1, their ninth consecutive loss, matching last year's longest losing streak. Oakland also has lost 18 of its past 20, the first time the club has done that since April 22-May 13, 1994.
At 53-60, the A's have their worst record after 113 games since 1998. Thirty times, they've scored one run or fewer - that's 27 percent of their games.
Oakland went hitless through the first five innings Wednesday and then squandered a bases-loaded, nobody-out situation in the seventh. It was the second night in a row in which the A's loaded the bases with no outs and failed to score.
