-MLB's official 2008 Oakland Athletics wall calendar has four players on its cover, and the two players in the center of the action panorama are — you guessed it — Dan Haren and Nick Swisher. Happy New Year, A's fans! Probably should have gone with that calendar of the poker-playing dogs.
-The other two players on the calendar cover are Mark Ellis and Eric Chavez. Next to go? At least with Ellis, who will be at free agent at the end of the 2008 season, it's plausible because he could have market value, and it's unlikely he'll be re-signed. Chavez is probably safe, because no one will take on his contract without knowing how he'll recover from his myriad surgical procedures.
-Oh yeah, same calendar, Mr. January: Haren. Ouch. Enough already. February: Jason Kendall. Huh? And May delivers Marco Scutaro. Man, they must have really gone to print early with that one. But perhaps with another trade, the A's can rush out a can't-miss prospects calendar as a supplement.
-A natural two-for-one at Amazon.com: the '08 calendar and a copy of "Moneyball."
