Default Eric Chavez included on ballot of top 50 All-Time Gold Glove Award winners

OAKLAND -- Oakland A's third baseman Eric Chavez is included on a ballot listing the 50 greatest Gold Glove Award winners of the past 50 years, as fans will have the opportunity to vote for the best player at each position during Rawlings Gold Glove Golden Anniversary celebration, titled the "Summer of Glove," to determine the All-Time Gold Glove Team.

The ballot was determined by 70 panelists that included current and former baseball officials, managers, Ford C. Frick Award winners, J.G. Taylor Spink Award winners and other baseball experts, including broadcasters, historians and current and past presidents of the Baseball Writers Association of America. The final ballot, which includes 18 outfielders, six fielders at each infield position, five catchers and three pitchers, was selected among more than 250 players who have ever won a Rawlings Gold Glove Award.

Fans may cast their vote online at Celebrating 50 Years of the Rawlings Gold Glove, which provides comprehensive background on each player listed on the ballot, as well as tools to enable voters to compare players head-to-head from different eras. Fans can also vote at thousands of sporting goods retailer locations, by mobile device and text messaging, or via the U.S. Postal Service. Visit Celebrating 50 Years of the Rawlings Gold Glove for complete details. Voting runs through June 19.

Chavez won his sixth consecutive American League Gold Glove Award at third base last season, joining Brooks Robinson (16) and Buddy Bell (6) as the only AL third baseman to win six or more Gold Gloves. He is just one of six third baseman in Major League history who have won six or more Gold Glove Awards, including Mike Schmidt (10), Scott Rolen (7) and Robin Ventura (6). Chavez is one of six third baseman listed on the All-Time Gold Glove ballot, along with Robinson, Schmidt, Bell, Rolen and Ken Boyer.

The complete ballot for the All-Time Rawlings Gold Glove Team includes pitchers Bob Gibson, Jim Kaat, Greg Maddux; catchers Johnny Bench, Bob Boone, Bill Freehan, Ivan Rodriguez, Jim Sundberg; first basemen Keith Hernandez, Don Mattingly, Wes Parker, Vic Power, J.T. Snow, Bill White; second basemen Roberto Alomar, Bill Mazeroski, Joe Morgan, Bobby Richardson, Ryne Sandberg, Frank White; third basemen Buddy Bell, Ken Boyer, Eric Chavez, Brooks Robinson, Scott Rolen, Mike Schmidt; shortstops Luis Aparicio, Mark Belanger, Dave Concepcion, Derek Jeter, Ozzie Smith, Omar Vizquel; and outfielders: Paul Blair, Roberto Clemente, Andre Dawson, Jim Edmonds, Dwight Evans, Curt Flood, Ken Griffey Jr., Torii Hunter, Andruw Jones, Al Kaline, Garry Maddox, Willie Mays, Kirby Puckett, Ichiro Suzuki, Larry Walker, Devon White, Dave Winfield, Carl Yastrzemski.

The greatest measure of fielding excellence since 1957, the heralded Rawlings Gold Glove AwardŽ is presented annually to 18 Major League Baseball players, one for each position, in both the National and American Leagues. In 1957, only nine players received the award. These outstanding players are selected as the best fielding players at their respective positions by Major League coaches and managers prior to the conclusion of the regular season. Managers and coaches may not select players from their own club and only vote for players in their own league.

I agree he is one of my favorite players and a large part of the reason i tend to root for the A's when they arent playing the Sox or Nationals.

A deserving honor for a modern day human vacuum machine. I love watching him play and here's hoping Ron Washington can help Hank Blalock improve defensively. Visit The Talkin Texan Rangers Blog.
