Default Athletics claim left-handed pitcher Lenny DiNardo off waivers from Boston

OAKLAND, Calif. -- The Oakland Athletics announced today the club has claimed left-handed pitcher Lenny DiNardo off waivers from Boston. To make room for DiNardo on the club's 40-man roster, the A's have designated outfielder Hiram Bocachica for assignment. In addition, outfielder Charles Thomas was outrighted to Triple-A Sacramento and will be a non-roster invitee to Spring Training.

DiNardo posted a 1-2 record and 7.85 ERA in 13 games, six starts for the Red Sox last season. The 27-year old left-hander began the 2006 season on Boston's Opening Day roster and made two relief appearances before joining the Red Sox starting rotation on April 17. He made five starts, posting a 1-2 record and 8.10 ERA, before leaving the game on May 21 at Philadelphia with a neck strain. DiNardo was placed on the 15-day disabled list on May 24 and missed 92 games due to the injury. He made a pair of rehab assignments and combined to make five starts with the Gulf Coast League Red Sox, Double-A Portland and Triple-A Pawtucket. DiNardo was reinstated from the DL on August 31 and made one start and five relief appearances for the Red Sox in September.

DiNardo also played with the Red Sox in 2004 and 2005 and has compiled a 1-3 record and 5.53 ERA in 43 career Major League appearances, including seven starts. He was originally drafted by the New York Mets in the third round of the June, 2001 draft and was selected by the Red Sox in the Major League Rule 5 Draft from the Mets on December 15, 2003.

Bocachica joined the A's last year when rosters expanded on September 1 and went 3 for 13 with three walks in eight games. He began the 2006 season on the Sacramento disabled list with a broken right wrist and hit .286 in four games at Single-A Stockton and .326 with 19 home runs and 60 RBI in 77 games with Triple-A Sacramento.

Thomas spent the entire 2006 season at Triple-A Sacramento and batted .274 with nine home runs and 43 RBI in 114 games.
