Default Holy Toledo: King still in the running

LAKE BUENA VISTA, Fla. -- The late, great Bill King remains in the hearts and minds of those who listened to him broadcast Athletics games for 25 years.

For the second consecutive year, King has been selected as one of the 10 finalists for the Ford C. Frick Award.

"It has been more than a year since Bill passed away, and this kind of statement from the fans is fabulous," said Ken Korach, who was King's broadcast sidekick for 10 years. "He made a tremendous and lasting impression on a lot of people."

Presented annually since 1978 for excellence in baseball broadcasting, the Frick Award -- named in memory of Hall of Famer Ford C. Frick, the renowned sportswriter, radio broadcaster, National League president and baseball commissioner -- is given to an active or retired broadcaster who has totaled a minimum of 10 years' continuous Major League broadcast service with a ballclub or network, or a combination of the two.

King spent parts of five decades in the Bay Area, giving fans of the three major sports hours of delightful listening, using his trademark "Holy Toledo" phrase when it was most pertinent -- which was often. He was the voice of the San Francisco/Golden State Warriors, the Oakland/Los Angeles Raiders and the A's.
