OAKLAND -- Before every A's home game, Antonio Perez can usually be seen taking early infield practice with third-base coach Ron Washington. The A's reserve infielder also takes extra swings for the A's simulated games and early batting practice.
Perez has appeared in one game since Sept. 10, when he was a pinch-runner, and has just nine at-bats this month. But the extra practice may help out Perez at third base over the next few days, because Eric Chavez has been sidelined again with a sore left hamstring.
Chavez was been bothered with the same problem throughout the season and aggravated the injury when he was running down a foul ball during Tuesday's game against the Indians.
Athletic trainer Larry Davis said Chavez had an MRI on Wednesday that showed some torn tissue in his hamstring that indicates a strain and is day to day.
The timing couldn't be worse for the A's, who start a three-game series against the second-place Angels on Friday.
