OAKLAND -- A character from the "Major League" movies named Pedro Cerrano crushed Major League fastballs and was miffed each time he saw a fat curveball.
Cerrano didn't say much in the movies other than "hats for bats," and he was known more for his crushing home runs.
A's slugger Nick Swisher also crushes a lot fastballs for homers, but he speaks much better English than Cerrano and is never at a loss for words. For example, during an away game earlier this year, a camera panned the A's dugout and showed Swisher talking to a security guard, who just nodded as Swisher went on yapping. The broadcaster said: "It's true, Swisher can make a conversation with anybody."
Swisher may rarely be silent, but he's the A's equivalent to Cerrano at the plate. Swisher started the season hitting .305 through two months, but the switch-hitter slumped during the next three months to drop his average to as low as .246 on Sept. 2.
