OAKLAND -- Bobby Kielty and Cliff Lee are friends away from the baseball field. And entering Tuesday, Lee had all of the bragging rights, having held Kielty to two hits in 12 at-bats.
The two players spend time together with their families during the offseason in Arkansas, where Kielty's wife, Meredith, and Lee's wife, Kristen, were best friends growing up.
The next time he sees Lee in Arkansas, Kielty will have something to boast about. The A's switch-hitter nailed his first career grand slam off Lee in the sixth inning on Tuesday to give the A's their first lead of the game during a 7-3 win at McAfee Coliseum.
"He kind of owned me in my career," Kielty said. "Maybe I will be able to talk a little smack now, the next time I see him."
Kielty's blast kept the A's 6 1/2 games ahead of the Angels, who beat the Royals, in the American League West and reduced their magic number for clinching the division to six.
