Default Indians vs A's

vs.

OAKLAND -- Monday night was quiet at McAfee Coliseum.

With the below-.500 Cleveland Indians in town, there were more empty green seats than bodies. It was a scene much different from the previous three games against the defending-champion White Sox.

No nightly homer from Frank Thomas. No curtain call. No come-from-behind victory. No quality pitching or defensive gems in the field. And certainly no win.

The main problem for the A's during the 7-2 loss on Monday could be traced to Dan Haren's shortest outing of the year. And the offense didn't make much noise, either.

Oakland came into the game batting .302 in September for the best mark in the Majors, but the problem wasn't getting hits. Timely hits were what was missing as the A's went 0-for-5 with runners in scoring position, grounded into three double plays and left six runners stranded.

Well he's kind of had it in me ever since i accidentally ran over his dog. Actually, replace "accidentally" with "repeatedly" and replace "dog" with "son".

OAKLAND -- Bobby Kielty and Cliff Lee are friends away from the baseball field. And entering Tuesday, Lee had all of the bragging rights, having held Kielty to two hits in 12 at-bats.

The two players spend time together with their families during the offseason in Arkansas, where Kielty's wife, Meredith, and Lee's wife, Kristen, were best friends growing up.

The next time he sees Lee in Arkansas, Kielty will have something to boast about. The A's switch-hitter nailed his first career grand slam off Lee in the sixth inning on Tuesday to give the A's their first lead of the game during a 7-3 win at McAfee Coliseum.

"He kind of owned me in my career," Kielty said. "Maybe I will be able to talk a little smack now, the next time I see him."

Kielty's blast kept the A's 6 1/2 games ahead of the Angels, who beat the Royals, in the American League West and reduced their magic number for clinching the division to six.

Milton Bradley and Frank Thomas combined to drive in three runs in the seventh inning as the A's mounted a comeback to make a winner out of Esteban Loaiza. The victory reduced Oakland's magic number to clinch the AL West to five.

Oakland catcher Jason Kendall knocked in four runs, leading the Athletics, who dropped their magic number to 4, past the Indians. Rich Harden struck out seven in three innings in his first start since June 4.
