The Yankees' sharpest pitcher since early June, Andy Pettitte was off his game in the opener of a four-game set with the Red Sox, allowing nine hits in 4 2/3 innings to take his first loss since May 17. The loss dropped the Yankees to five games behind second-place Boston in the AL East.

Eight innings after Alex Rodriguez tied Mickey Mantle on the all-time homer list, Yankees rookie Brett Gardner completed a walk-off win over the Red Sox with a 10th-inning single to secure a four-game split. Mariano Rivera pitched two scoreless innings of relief for the win.
