Home runners: Royals steal win
Royals 5, Yankees 2

The Yankees opened an eight-game road trip with a loss in Kansas City behind Phil Hughes, who struggled with his control and handed off to the bullpen with nobody out in the fourth inning. Jorge Posada and Derek Jeter sat out with injuries, and Alex Rodriguez struck out four times.

The Royals improved to 5-2 with a win in their home opener, receiving five gritty innings from Brian Bannister, who weathered a 39-pitch second inning on his way to a 2-0 start. Joey Gathright had three of the Royals' five stolen bases and scored a pair of runs.

I expect Kennedy to bounce back with a solid outing. This Yankee offense is yet to explode so I would expect them to score some runs tonight. A-Rod to go long possibly given how many jacks he hit against KC last season.

Yankees lose another by the score of 4-0. Im getting a little worried here. Our offense needs to wake up like now! And also, I know we didnt score any runs so it didnt matter this game, but kyle farnsworth is just horrible. How many times is he going to cost us a game before we ship him out of here.

Farnsworth is just brutal Tru! I know it's early but I don't like the body language and the look from this team. Maybe when Jeter comes back that will help.

Yanks head to Fenway on high note
Yankees 6, Royals 1
Andy Pettitte was sharp, allowing just five hits in 6 2/3 innings. (Orlin Wagner/AP

The Yankees' offense needed a jolt, and Joe Girardi's new lineup provided just that. Melky Cabrera contributed a homer and an RBI single, Alex Rodriguez and Jorge Posada homered in the ninth, and Andy Pettitte was sharp after a brief rain delay, winning his first of 2008.

Though the Royals dropped the finale, they do walk away with a series win over the AL East powerhouse Yankees. John Bale was decent, but an early Jose Guillen RBI double didn't hold up for long, as New York pulled ahead and cruised to victory behind a trio of solo home runs.
