Yankee hero Jim Leyritz had nearly twice the legal limit of alcohol in his system when he blew a red light and killed a young mother in a car wreck, blood tests show.
The former catcher, who retired eight years ago, balked at breath and blood tests for alcohol even after learning that 30-year-old Fredia Ann Veitch died in the Dec.28 wreck. Fort Lauderdale cops said Wednesday a blood test taken nearly three hours after the 3:20 a.m. collision registered a 0.14 alcohol level. The legal limit in Florida is 0.08.
The amount of alcohol in thebloodstream reaches its highest level about an hour after drinking.
A second blood test taken at 7:12 a.m., nearly four hours after the crash, showed a 0.13 level.
The finding came as no surprise to the dead woman's brother-in-law Rick Veitch.
