Yankees vs Tigers Game Thread: 8/16-8/19
Tigers 8, Yankees 5
Yankees:

Bobby Abreu hit a two-run homer in the third inning, but New York never recovered after Mike Mussina gave up a grand slam in the first inning. With the loss, the Yankees fell a half-game behind the idle Mariners in the American League Wild Card race.

Tigers:

Carlos Guillen, fighting the flu, blasted a grand slam in the first inning as Detroit never looked back in the series opener. Ivan Rodriguez later homered and Justin Verlander pitched into the sixth. The win put the Tigers into first place in the American League Central by a half-game over idle Cleveland.

Yankees 6, Tigers 1

Andy Pettitte was sharp and got plenty of backing as the Yanks snapped a three-game slide and evened their series with the Tigers. Bobby Abreu's bad-hop, two-out RBI base hit opened the Bombers' scoring in the third inning. Jason Giambi added two solo homers, and Andy Phillips doubled in two runs in the sixth.

Tigers:

Brandon Inge's RBI double gave the Tigers a lead in the top of the third inning, but the Yanks used a bad-hop base hit to score two in their half of the third and added more runs in the fourth and sixth off starter Nate Robertson. Cameron Maybin went 0-for-4 with two strikeouts in his big league debut.

Yankees 5, Tigers 2
Bobby Abreu's two-run shot sparked a decisive four-run rally in the sixth inning. (Frank Franklin II/AP)
Yankees:

Some worried Roger Clemens would be rusty, given that he'd missed a start due to a suspension, but though he surrendered some hits, he limited the damage, allowing just two runs over six innings of work, as the Yankees downed the Tigers.

Tigers:
Quote:

The Tigers touched Roger Clemens for 10 hits, but they managed to convert those knocks into just two runs against the Rocket. The Tigers touched Roger Clemens for 10 hits, but they managed to convert those knocks into just two runs against the Rocket. Rookie Cameron Maybin made his mark, singling in his first at-bat and homering to dead center in his second.

Yankees 9, Tigers 3
Johnny Damon celebrates after his homer put the Yankees up for good in the sixth. (Bill Kostroun/AP)
Yankees:

It was a nip-and-tuck battle through five innings on Sunday, with the score tied in the sixth when Johnny Damon stepped to the plate. His towering solo shot to the upper deck in right gave the dominant Yankees bullpen all the cushion they would need.
|
Tigers:
Quote:
|
Jeremy Bonderman allowed just three earned runs on Sunday, but the unearned run he surrendered was crucial, as the Tigers, who scored three of their own against Yankees starter Chien-Ming Wang, managed nary a hit against the New York bullpen.
