Jeter Passes DiMaggio On Hit List

Derek Jeter put himself in pretty good company with his three hits last night, passing Joe DiMaggio for sole possession of fifth place on the Yanks' all-time list with 2,216. Only Lou Gehrig (2,721), Babe Ruth (2,518), Mickey Mantle (2,415) and Bernie Williams (2,336) have more hits in franchise history.

"Honestly, I'd be lying if I said it wasn't nice, but we're concerned with other things like winning games," Jeter said. "When you're in any category with him, it says you've been playing a long time."
"When you start putting those names up on the board, and I've been here the whole time Derek has been here, it's incredible," Joe Torre said. "Every single year, he's been as consistent as you could ask for."
Jeter, who turns 33 on June 26, has topped the 200-hit mark five times. Jeter is on pace to surpass Gehrig's team record in late 2009 or early 2010 and could become the first Yankee to record 3,000 hits.
