On the day Roger Clemens announced his decision to return to the Yankees, Darrell Rasner pitched 5 2/3 scoreless innings in a shutout win over the Mariners. Reliever Scott Proctor was ejected in the seventh after throwing inside to Yuniesky Betancourt.

The Mariners were nearly no-hit on Saturday, and on Sunday, they looked no better at the plate. Jarrod Washburn limited the Yankees to three runs in 5 1/3 innings, but his effort was spoiled, as Seattle collected only four hits, two by Jose Vidro. Raul Ibanez lost two fly balls in the sun in left field, dropping both, though neither was ruled an error. Jose Guillen went hitless with two strikeouts in four at-bats.

What happened out there yesterday? What did Proctor do?
He hit one of Seattle's batters because they hit one of our guys who collided into their catcher in a previous inning. No harm no foul, but he was tossed alongside Torre.

Mariano Rivera was unable to keep the Mariners at bay on Monday, allowing a game-deciding solo blast to Adrian Beltre in the ninth. Matt DeSalvo pitched very well over seven innings in his debut, allowing one run on three hits.

The Mariners used single runs in the eighth and ninth innings on Monday night, including a solo homer by Adrian Beltre off Mariano Rivera, to earn the series split in New York. Miguel Batista pitched 6 1/3 solid innings, and George Sherrill got the win in relief.
