Default Bernie Still Holding out Hope of Return to NY

While of course I pray that no Yankee is injured during the season I do hope we can somehow find a spot for Bernie. Would love to see him back in the lineup on occasion for NY. Depending on how the rotation and bullpen shape up maybe we can drop a pitcher and add his bat later in the season.

NEW YORK -- An old friend called the New York Yankees clubhouse on Monday -- and left open the possibility he could be stopping by sometime this season.

Outfielder Bernie Williams, who declined a minor league spring training invitation and did not attend camp, but has not retired, called about three hours before the Yankees' opener, according to media reports.

I think Bernie has enough money that he can truly do what he wants. It's not like he isn't playing because he dislikes the staff. He even called Torre at the beginning of opening day and wished him good luck.

Sure he can do what he want money wise....but he can't do what he wants playing wise. And that's playing for NY with a non minor league contract. He would probably play for very little $$ is their was a spot for him.

The problem is after last year the Yanks are getting a lot of pressure and even Sheffield couldn't cut it and went to the Tigers to be a DH. It is their standards that cause friction and that is why teams like St. Louis, who isn't nearly as talented, can win the pennant.

The Sheff trade had more to do with him being a cancer in the clubhouse than anything else. The Abreu acquisition made parting with Sheff the obvious choice. The Yankees knew by the end of the season that Gary was eventually going to be dealt. It had nothing to do with his talent because obviously it is still there.

It would be a shame for Bernie to end his Yankees career on a low,but if he aint going to play,he should have asked for a trade.
