The Yankees informed Gary Sheffield yesterday that they planned to pick up his $13 million option for next season. His response — predictably — was an angry one.
"This will not work, this will not work at all,'' he told USA Today.
General manager Brian Cashman did not return a call seeking comment. But it is likely the Yankees picked up the option with the intention of trading Sheffield, who will turn 38 next month.
"I don't know what they're going to do,'' he said. "Maybe they picked it up just to trade me. If they do that, if I just go to a team for one year, there's going to be a problem, a big problem. I will not do this.''
