Shawn Chacon had eight days between his last two starts, and by the time he takes the mound again on Tuesday, it will have been nine days since he was in a game. In other words, he's been doing an unprecedented amount of waiting recently.
"I don't think I've ever been in a situation where I've pitched so sporadically," he said yesterday. "One day, then seven days. I can only throw so many (bullpen sessions)."
Simply put, Chacon is the lowest man on the rotation depth chart which means his schedule is sacrificed for the sake of the other pitchers. With an off day today, that means Mike Mussina, Randy Johnson and Jaret Wright will face the Mets this weekend, while Chien-Ming Wang goes Monday against Cleveland. Joe Torre could have tapped Chacon over Wright, but deferred to Wright because he has looked better recently.
