Chavez will make $1.8 million this year and $2.05 million in 2009. He can add $250,000 in performance bonuses this year and $375,000 in 2009, based mostly on plate appearances and number of games.
Chavez injured his right ankle and hamstring in a Winter League game on Dec. 1 sliding into home, but says he is completely healthy now. He was sidelined with a strained left hamstring much of last season, injuring the leg against the Phillies on June 6. He batted .287 in only 150 at-bats. "I missed so much time last year, and I can't wait to be a part of things this season and help this team get back to the postseason," Chavez said. "I'm fine, 100 percent ready to go. I can't wait for the first game to get here."
Met GM Omar Minaya is happy to have Chavez back in the Shea outfield, where he made that spectacular catch against the Cardinals' Scott Rolen in the Game 7 of the 2006 NLCS. "Endy helps us offensively and defensively in a variety of ways," said Minaya. "He plays all three outfield positions well, has good speed and has proved to be a clutch hitter for us."
