New York opened the scoring with four runs in the top of the second inning. Ben Johnson and David Newhan delivered back-to-back solo home runs. Jose Valentin, who also hit a home run in the game, went 2-for-3. Lastings Milledge added a solo homer off lefty Arnie Munoz.

Mets on the mound: Perez pitched four innings and gave up a run on two hits. He walked two and struck out none. Relievers Ambiorix Burgos and Pedro Feliciano each pitched a scoreless inning.
