The greatest reliably recorded speed at which a baseball has been pitched is 100.9 mph by Lynn Nolan Ryan (California Angels) at Anaheim Stadium in California on August 20, 1974.

Mark Wohlers was clocked by radar throwing 103 MPH in Spring Training in 1995. Joel Zumaya matched this in 2006 while pitching at the McAfee Colesium in Oakland, but they say Nolan still holds the record because those guns are dodgy.

Radar gns are pretty lame IMO.

Anthony Reyes for example threw like 93-95 mph in Memphis, and when he got called up he threw 90-91 mph.

I'd go with Joel Zumaya

I believe Nolan Ryan has the fastest pitch record at around 103mph but Joel Zumaya also threw 103mph so they share the record

At the Minnesota Twins Metrodome on july 3rd 2009, the Detroit Tigers Joel Zumaya threw a pitch that was registered at 105. It was in the bottom of the 10th inning i believe (although it may have been the bottom of the 11th, the innings tend to blend into each other in a 16 inning game). It has yet to be "officially" verified (and thus placed among the record books). He registered 1 other pitch at 104 and several more at 103. I personally watched the game and as a Tigers fan, have seen him pitch in about 85% of his games. On a side note, I was at the TIgers-Astros game on 06-27-06 when Zumaya threw 103 in the top of the 8th 3 times. Interestingly, Roger "The Rocket" Clemens started for Astros, and hit 97 mph once, but that pitch looked like a change up in comparison to Zumaya's fastballs. Seeing a fast pitch on TV does NO justice to witnessing that speed in person.

I didn't know that anyone had thrown that much over 100mph. It is definitely true that you have to see the pitches in person to get a good feel for the speed.

Randy Johnson threw, 100 miles per hour or more during his prime. I believe he even got as fast as 102, no record but pretty close....

I believe Jonathan Broxton threw 102 against the Phillies in 09' and Justin Verlander threw 102 in 07'.

There have been several 100mph throwers over the years (Kerry Wood, Brad Lidge, Seth McClung, etc.), but I didn't know about the 105!

I saw a kid in the minors throw 103. It was a couple of years ago. I wish I could remember his name.
