Ryan: Baseball ignored steroids problem
The Canadian Press
3/8/2008 8:34:43 PM
ARLINGTON, Texas - Hall of Famer Nolan Ryan said Saturday that baseball was finally addressing the use of steroids and performance-enhancing drugs by major leaguers after previously ignoring the problem.
In one of Ryan's first public appearances since being hired as Texas Rangers team president last month, the career strikeout leader said he is confident the sport will find a solution.
"Baseball turned its back on the problem and ignored it," Ryan said. "Anytime you realize you have a problem, the longer you go without addressing that problem, then when you do decide to address it, the tougher it is to do. I think that's where we are with baseball."

I think Baseball has ignored this problem for more than a decade!!
Lets hope they get to the bottom of it and get this sport cleaned up, and please, don't push anything under the carpet!!!

It's called money. Baseball doesn't want to lose all the $$$, so of course they did not want to deal with it until they were made to. Big burley homerun hitters put butts in the seats, not skinny single hitters.

I'm waiting for someone who played in the 60s or 70s to come forward and discuss this! Roger Maris' ghost will point out that there was a problem in the 60s, I'm calling it now!
Seriously, though, enough is enough. We know there's a problem, we know PEDs are baseball's dirty little secret - but there comes a time where there is little left to do and anything further is all but a waste. Investigations are a waste of money and won't result in anything and baseball's drug policy is among the most stringent in the world. The problem is corrected in the MLB of 2008... you can't fix the past, and I feel that's what people want.

I hear what your saying about enough is enough, but don't you think if they don't get this cleaned up, and fast, that anyone who breaks a record etc. will be second guessed the whole time? Did he have help along the way? Anything worth while is worth the fight and the cost.

I understand the money side of it, but look what's happening now. If they had of nipped it in the butt when they first suspected anything, this probably wouldn't be happening now.

In all honesty I feel that this is an issue that the MLB will never see disappear. There is always going to be some sort of smear associated with any record being broken - it'll fade over time, but it will be gradually.
I'm not sure what will come from increased incrimination - will players be punished? How will the league punish players that no longer play anymore? There are a great deal of questions on both sides, and I do not like the utilization of PEDs any more than anyone else here... but I don't really know what good will come of further investigation.
