Report: Shawn Green retires after 15 seasons

New York, NY (Sports Network) - Outfielder Shawn Green, a 15-year major league veteran most recently with the New York Mets, has reportedly announced his retirement.

He retired kinda early if ou ask me, I think he still had gas left in the tank

Always kinda like Green. He seemed to have a quite consistency of play. GL to him.

I would have loved to see what Shawn Green could have done in his career if not for his consistently nagging injury problems. He didn't really start to miss a ton of games until last season, but I always remember him being on the Dodgers' injury report for a tweaked hamstring, sore back, etc. The man had so much talent... and I wish him the best in the future.

Same here. Maybe it's because of the injuries, and the fact that he just didn't like to miss games?

FORMER MET ENJOYING GREEN-ER PASTURES

February 28, 2008 -- Shawn Green anticipated that it would happen. Now it's a done deal.

The right fielder, who played with the Mets for the last year and a half and spent parts of 15 seasons in the majors, told The Post yesterday that he has retired.

"I had planned on retiring at the end of this contract," the 35-year-old Green said yesterday in a phone conversation. "If something where I could live at home popped up, then I would have had to take that under consideration. But I still don't know what I would have done."

That decision never really had to be made. The affable Green, a former member of the 30-30 club who once smashed four homers in one game, wrapped up his tenure with the Mets last season. He said yesterday that a bunch of teams then showed interest in him, but he indicated that he simply wasn't willing to be that far from his California home.

So, in short, Shawn Green wanted to be closer to home, regardless of whether it meant playing in California or retiring. Seems like Tom Glavine all over again... though, I can't believe that there isn't a team in California or the surrounding area that wouldn't take a chance on him - after all, he had a brilliant stretch run for the Mets.

Green had more class than most major league players. He never garnered a lot of attention because he let his bat speak for him instead of running his mouth. He was a dangerous hitter for a long time, very admirable in the tough world of the professional hitter.
