hey dude, you want some stats, here's some stats...
On paper, Detroit had an overall better offense than Boston. Detroit: Runs= 887, HR=177, RBI= 857, BA=.287.. Boston? R=867, HR=166, RBI=829, BA=.279.
For pitching, Detroit: 4.57 ERA, 45 Saves, .266 opposing BA. Boston: 3.87 ERA, 44 S, .247 BA.
I have all the respect in the world for Boston and their pitching, but with the exception of Beckett (and at times Dice-K) their rotation wasn't all that spectacular. Dice-K won 5 games where he gave up at least 4 runs (one had 7ER) and got a ND on 2 (Another w/ 7ER). You could just say he's getting used to MLB hitters, but I think the hitter will be more used to him. And Wakefield's year was great but there's no way he OR Schilling will have a great year. It was timely hitting that kept bailing them out.
Verlander is sick, Willis has a whole new group of hitters that'll need to get used to his wind -up, Rogers can get the job done, and it's up to Robertson and Bonderman to be solid. And I doubt Carmona will have another career year, so that leaves Sabathia as the only real threat with Byrd and Westbrook being decent and whoever they can get to fill the 5th hole.
Not to mention with all that rediculous production and protection in the line-up, add in Miguel Cabrera and they could easily outscore both NY and Boston next year.
Detroit also plays in a more competitive division. Say what you like about the East but with the exception of the Yankees, it's not what it used to be.
And to answer your question, Willis had 10 wins and 15 losses on a team that had 25 less wins than Boston, 790 R, 749 RBI, and .267 BA. Enough stats?
