I disagree that Cal was overrated. And it's not just because I'm an Orioles fan.
Yes, his numbers in the regular season and the postseason aren't anywhere near that of Gehrig or Jeter, but he did revolutionize the new era of SS with power. Prior to Cal, there weren't many other SS whose main thing was hitting for power, outside of Ernie Banks.
The simple fact that he did play every day speaks to his reliability and versatility. He went through his slumps, as does every player, but rarely did he ever have an offensive slump and a defensive slump simultaneously.
And if we're discussing whether a player is great because of his regular season and postseason numbers, what about Banks? 512 regular season HR, never got to the World Series because he was on some awful Cubs teams, just as Cal was on some awful Orioles teams(1988 anyone?).
Cal not only spent his entire career as an Oriole; he was also a hometown kid, growing up in Havre de Grace, a short distance from Baltimore.
Personally, I don't consider Jeter, Cal or Banks overrated; they were each great in their own way.
