Gene Mauch, ``the little general'' who won 1,901 games as a manager but became infamous for historic losses, died Monday. He was 79. Mauch died at Eisenhower Medical Center in Rancho Mirage, Calif., after a long battle with cancer, the Los Angeles Angels said. He had lived in the desert resort area since retiring.
