United League Baseball

Negro Leaguers Join Fanfest Lineup

SAN ANGELO, Texas - An important part of not only baseball history, but also American history will be recognized at Fanfest. After the success of our Negro League Tribute night last season, the Colts are proud to announce that John "Mulekicker" Miles, Roy White, Everett Turner, and Dick "Lefty" O'Neal will be at Fanfest, which will be Sunday, February 10th at Chilango's City from noon to 3pm. All four of them were members of the South Texas Negro League.

Miles played for many teams, including the Chicago American Giants of the Negro American League, the San Antonio Black Missions, and the Laredo Apache of the Gulf Coast Negro League, among others. He was a member of Satchel Paige's All-Star team, and in 1947, while with the American Giants, hit eleven home runs in eleven consecutive games.

White, originally from West Texas, got his start with Uvalde Green Hornets, and also a member of the Chicago American Giants. During the forties, White played for the Ligons All-Stars and the Austin Black Pioneers before being drafted by the Boston Braves. He was soon drafted into the military, and after serving, returned to the Braves organization. White would later play for the San Antonio Black Sox before retiring.

Turner began his baseball career at Texas Southern in 1951. He then went on to the Houston Slugger from 1951-1953, and also played for the San Antonio Redbirds and Indians. In 1963, Turner played for the San Antonio Black Sox of the South Texas Negro League, and would later manage the Black Sox from 1974 to 1977. The Black Sox were likened to the New York Yankees of the South Texas Negro League.

Signed by the Cardinals in 1967, O'Neal has the distinction of being the only white male to have been a member of teams in two separate Negro Leagues. Among the teams O'Neal played for include the Biloxi Dodgers of the Gulf Coast Negro League and the Black Sox, where Turner was his manager. O'Neal is a professional pitching coach, and is a scout with the Atlanta Braves.

Advanced tickets for the event will be $8, and tickets purchased the day of the event will be $10. Tickets are available at Chilango's City and the Colts ticket office, which can be reached at (325) 94-COLTS. Additional outlets will be added later.
