RedHawks field staff to stay intact in 2008

The Oklahoma RedHawks will have familiar dugout leadership in 2008, as manager Bobby Jones, pitching coach Andy Hawkins, coach Randy Whisler and trainer Lee Slagle have all been selected by the Texas Rangers to return to the positions they held last season.

"It's a pleasure to have Bobby's influence and leadership within the RedHawks once again," said Scott Pruitt, the RedHawks' Managing General Partner. "Our organization has the utmost trust and faith in his managerial traits and we look forward to the upcoming season."

Jones, 58, is the winningest Triple-A manager in Oklahoma City history with 492 local wins. He guided the RedHawks to a competitive third place finish in 2007 with a 71-72 record, keeping the team in the division race until the final series of the year despite some 140 player moves. The 2008 season with be Jones' eighth in Oklahoma City, as the former Texas Ranger and California Angel also served as 89ers manager in 1993-94 and RedHawks skipper from 2002-05, winning three division titles in his previous stint with Oklahoma. Jones is entering his 41st season in professional baseball and his 21st consecutive campaign as a coach or manager in the Rangers' organization. He makes his off-season home in Tulsa.

Hawkins, 47, returns for his third season as RedHawks pitching coach. The former first-round pick of the San Diego Padres in 1978 spent 10 seasons in the Major Leagues with San Diego, the New York Yankees and Oakland, compiling an 84-91 record with a 4.22 ERA. He owns the only World Series win in Padres history, helping defeat Detroit in Game 2 of the 1984 Series. Hawkins directed the RedHawks to a club-record 3.89 ERA in 2006.

Whisler, 45, began his second stint in the Rangers' organization last year as the RedHawks coach, specializing in hitting instruction. The former Oklahoma State Cowboy (1982-85) was All-Big 8 and a member of the College World Series All-Tournament Team in 1984. Whisler holds bachelors and master's degrees from Oklahoma State. He has previously served at lower levels of the Rangers' system (1990-94), and has coached and managed with the San Diego Padres and Florida Marlins' organizations. He was the Cincinnati Reds' first base coach in 2004-05.

Slagle is set to return for his third season as RedHawks' trainer in 2008. A graduate of Auburn University, Slagle is a certified athletic trainer with the National Trainers Association and an associate member of the Professional Baseball Athletic Trainers Society. He has previous experience in the Boston Red Sox, Cleveland Indians and Montreal Expos' organizations.

The RedHawks' 2008 opener is Thursday, April 3 against Memphis at AT&T Bricktown Ballpark.

Two R-Braves announced as top prospects

The winds of change are sweeping through Atlanta. Sort of. Long-time general manager John Schuerholz stepped aside, and Frank Wren is in. There's a vacancy in center field in the big leagues for the first time in a long time, and some of the system's top prospects were traded away during this year's playoff hunt. But some things won't change -- the Braves will continue to develop from within.

Brandon Jones and Brent Lillibridge were named in Baseball America's recent ranking of Atlanta's top 10 prospects. Jones was ranked forth and Brent Lillibridge was rated the 6th best prospect in Atlanta's farm system. They were the only two members of the top 10 who played above A-ball in the Atlanta organization last season.

If you have a sports enthusiast in your family then you need to stop by the Braves on-line merchandise store for the perfect holiday gift. Simply click on a graphic below to be directed to the Braves on-line store.

Richmond Braves continue to lead the way for Mayos de Navojoa in Mexican Pacific League play. The Mayos, with four players from the Atlanta organization, are enjoying their second five game winning streak of the season and have moved into second place.

FORT MILL, S.C. - November 19, 2007 - The Chicago White Sox have acquired Gold Glove Award-winning shortstop Orlando Cabrera and cash considerations from the Los Angeles Angels in exchange for former Charlotte Knights right-handed pitcher Jon Garland.

In 2007, he recorded at least 10 wins, 30 starts and 200 innings pitched for the fourth consecutive year going 10-13 with two complete games, one shutout and a 4.23 ERA (208.1 IP - 98 ER) in 32 starts with the Sox. The 2007 season marked Garland's first losing campaign since 2003 (12-13) despite posting a team-high 21 quality starts.
