North Shore Halts Honolulu, Evens Series

The North Shore Honu pounded 14 hits en route to an 8-3, wire-to-wire victory over the Honolulu Sharks in a matinee matchup this afternoon at Waipahu's Hans L'Orange Park. The Honu improved to a league-best 17-7 mark thanks in part to the offensive efforts of Stephen Chapman and Mat Gamel, who each notched three hits.

Gamel also launched his fifth home run of the HWB campaign, scored twice and drove in three runs for North Shore. Shintaro Yoshida and Brad Corley each racked up two RBIs in support of Honu starter Bud Norris (2-0, 3.38 ERA) who earned the victory thanks to four strong innings in which he allowed one run on two hits and struck out four.

Kyler Burke doubled twice and picked up the lone RBI for Honolulu (12-11-1). Sharks starter Jimmy James fell to 1-2 and saw his ERA jump to 3.68 after allowing three runs on six hits in five innings.

Both squads return to Hans L'Orange Park tomorrow at noon for the rubber match of the three-game series.

San Angelo to Host ULB All-Star Game in ‘08

SAN ANGELO, Texas - The All-Stars are coming! The All-Stars are coming! San Angelo and Colts fans will be treated to watching the best players from United League Baseball this upcoming season. Last week, the United League awarded San Angelo the 2008 ULB All-Star game. The Colts organization is very excited about the news and looks forward to hosting the All-Star game and the events surrounding it. The Colts are coming off a wonderful 2007 season that saw the highest attendance since the franchise's second season in 2001.106,411 fans walked through the turnstiles during the 46 openings this season, which is an average of 2,313 per game.

"San Angelo is an excellent choice for our third All-Star game," said United League President Craig Brasfield. "Colts GM Mike Babcock runs a great operation, and Foster Field is a nice stadium. It just makes sense to have it in San Angelo."

"We are excited that our fans in San Angelo and in the entire Concho Valley region will get to experience the All-Star game and its festivities," said Babcock. "Hosting is more than an event. It is a recognition of the loyalty our wonderful fans have shown us."

This isn't the first time Foster Field has hosted an All-Star game. In 2003, the now-defunct Central League had its All-Star game in San Angelo. Five years later, San Angelo will be the site for another All-Star game.

"San Angelo is a great town, and has a wonderful fan base," stated Brasfield. "It is one of our better markets, and it is a chance for the United League to shine."

This will be the third All-Star game for the United League. The inaugural event was hosted by Edinburgh, and Amarillo was the site of the 2007 All-Star game. In last season's contest, the Team North All-Stars (Alexandria, Amarillo, and San Angelo) defeated the Team Rio Grande All-Stars (Edinburg, Laredo, and Rio Grande Valley) by a score of 10-1.

If your business is interested in sponsoring the event or donating for the gift bag, please contact Robert Gusick, the Colts' Director of Sales, at (325) 942-6587 or by email at rgusick@unitedleague.org.

The San Angelo Colts are a part of a six-team league that make up United League Baseball. The independent league has teams located in San Angelo, Laredo, Amarillo, Edinburg, and Rio Grande Valley, Texas as well as Alexandria, Louisiana, and began play in the 2006 season.

Edwards Returning to Colts

SAN ANGELO, Texas - After two seasons at the helm, baseball legend Doc Edwards' contract was renewed and will be back managing the Colts in 2008. It will mark 51 years in baseball for Edwards, who received the nickname "Doc" from being a Navy Medic. Despite not making the playoffs this season, the Colts made a comeback to finish the second half with a record of 22-23, second in the United League. On the entire season, the Colts finished 44-51. However, a record number of players were sold to major league organizations this season. Pitchers Stephen Artz, Drew Coffey, Luke Massetti, and Chace Vacek, along with infielder Eric Harryman were all signed by major league organizations.

In 2006, the Colts posted a 46-44 record, second in the United League. The Colts reached the best-of-3 semi-final series before losing to the eventual 2006 champions, the Alexandria Aces.

Howard Rodney "Doc" Edwards was signed as an amateur free agent by the Cleveland Indians in 1958. Edwards made his Major League debut on April 21, 1962 in Yankee Stadium. In his first at-bat, he drew a walk against Hall of Fame pitcher Whitey Ford, who he would later be teammates with. Edwards posted a .273 batting average in his rookie season, and would later play for the Kansas City Athletics, the New York Yankees, and the Philadelphia Phillies as well.

Doc played his final game with the Philadelphia Phillies on August 23, 1970, and ended up with a .269 career batting average. Primarily a catcher, Edwards had a stellar .985 career fielding percentage. With the Yankees, Doc played with greats such as Mickey Mantle, Whitey Ford, Elston Howard, Tony Kubek, and Jim Bouton amongst others.

After his playing years, Edward made an easy transition into coaching and managing. He would coach for the Phillies and Indians. After the Indians fired Pat Corrales in 1987, Doc received his chance to manage the big league team he started with. Edwards was the skipper for the Indians from 1987 to 1989, putting up a 173-207 record (.455).

Edwards also had a hand in an interesting part of baseball history when he was the manager of Rochester Redwings in 1981. In that season, the longest game in professional baseball history took place, a 33-inning marathon against Pawtucket.

Doc now lives in San Angelo full-time, and is a valued member of the San Angelo community.

White Sox Purchase Gaines' Contract

SAN ANGELO, Texas - It seems that once the Colts sell a player to a major league organization, it isn't long before that organization is back in San Angelo again. After the Yankees bought Stephen Artz in July, they added Luke Massetti and Chace Vacek in September. The Chicago White Sox organization picked up 2006 United League MVP John Anderson back in June, and now they are purchasing the contract of 2007 team MVP and United League Rookie of the Year, outfielder Ronnie Gaines.

This is the seventh Colt to be sold to a major league organization this season. Gaines joins Anderson, Artz, Drew Coffey, Eric Harryman, Massetti, and Vacek in affiliated ball.

"Even though we did not make the playoffs, the Colts 2007 season may go down in history as one of the most successful seasons for an independent league team," said Colts General Manager, Mike Babcock. "Seven players sold to major league organizations is the most I've ever heard of in my 13 years in independent baseball."

Batting primarily out of the leadoff spot with the Colts this season, Gaines posted a .334 batting average with 19 home runs. He showed his speed by swiping 29 stolen bases and hitting 10 triples.

The Temple native is familiar to San Angelo as Gaines played for the Angelo State Rams for two years. In his senior season, Gaines hit .417 with nine home runs, 60 RBIs and 28 stolen bases, and was selected All-Conference, All-Region, and second team All-American.

Terry Bevington named new Sports manager

After being out of baseball for over a year, Terry Bevington will return as the manager of the Shreveport Sports in 2008. This will be Bevington's second time as manager of the Sports as he was the first manager of the newly formed team in 2003 and part of 2004.

A resident of the Memphis, Tennessee area, Bevington was the manager for the Chicago White Sox for three years from 1995-97 and posted a record of 221-214, finishing second two years in the American League Central Division and third place one year.

Bevington signed as a catcher with the New York Yankees out of high school in 1974 and played seven years in the minor leagues. He reached the Triple-A level as a player in 1980 at Vancouver in the Pacific Coast League before becoming a player-coach that same year for Burlington, Iowa in the Midwest League.

"I am excited about coming back to Shreveport and working with the new front office staff. This is a great opportunity for me to get back into professional baseball and to be close to my home in the Memphis area," said Bevington.

He began his managing career at Burlington in 1981 with other stops in the Milwaukee Brewers organization at El Paso in the Texas League in 1984 and 1985. His first stop to the major leagues was in 1989 as the first base coach for the White Sox and then became the third base coach for the Sox from 1990 until 1995 when he became manager. After his managerial days with Chicago in 1998, he was the manager at Syracuse in the Triple-A International League, an affiliate of the Toronto Blue Jays. Bevington then became the third base coach with the Blue Jays from 1999-2001.

After his stint in Shreveport, Bevington was the manager of Edmonton in the independent Northern League.
