ULB-Former Coyote named Minor League Baseball's Relief Pitcher of the Year
Edinburg, TX; October 12, 2007 - United League Baseball (ULB) and the Edinburg Coyotes announced today that former Edinburg Coyotes relief pitcher Edwar Ramirez has been named Minor League Baseballs Relief Pitcher of the Year for 2007.
Ramirez had his contract purchased by the Yankees July 9th of the 2006 season. Ramirez became the first ULB alumnus in the league's young history to make a major league roster when he was called up to the Yankees on July 1, 2007.
In 2007 Ramirez began the year in Double-A Trenton and was called up to Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre on May 21st. Between Double-A and Triple-A, Ramirez pitched 56 2/3 innings, allowing 26 hits and 22 walks while striking out 102. Five runs were charged to him all season in the Minors, resulting in a ridiculous 0.79 ERA. Hitters managed a .135 batting average against the reliever at both levels.
The 26-year old right hander finished his 2006 United League season with a 1-1 record and 1.07 ERA striking out 46 batters and walking only 10. In 25 appearances for the Coyotes, Ramirez recorded 16 saves which led the United League despite his early departure. His strikeouts per nine inning average was an astounding 15.94 and was among the United League leaders in strikeouts despite pitching half the innings of some starters. Ramirez also was astounding in front of the home town fans where he didn't allow a hit in 11 appearances.
"We would like to congratulate Edwar for this honor," stated United League President Craig Brasfield, "It says a lot for the Edinburg Coyotes, United League Baseball and Independent Baseball as a whole that he was able to have this type of success and then have if recognized nationally."
United League Baseball is an independent league of six professional baseball teams located in Texas and Louisiana. The United League is preparing for its third season with teams located in Amarillo, Edinburg, Laredo, Harlingen, and San Angelo, Texas; and Alexandria, Louisiana.
