Default Rick Ankiel can smash a ball..

He'll probably not be up until September as somethin to do with his contract but the kid could always hit.. he could pitch too but lets not talk about that lol..

He's in AAA this year as a CF.. he was one of the last players cut from Spring Training..

He started the year off..

First Four Games: 2/16 with a 2B and a run
Since April 10th (Next Four Games): 5/14, 4 R, 2B, 3 HR, 9 RBI

I know it's early but he's jumped into leading the PCL in HR's and he's now 5th in RBI's.. Granted his BA.. is .233 (7/30) he can smash the ball and could be what the Cardinals need.. he's still got the talent

Anyways I dont care what he does.. still pretty interesting to follow him.. be nice if he can get to the .280 avg for year or so and draw more walks.. then I'll think more of him!!

Cracked another homer today.. 5th of the season.. has 14 rbi's.. the problem.. going 1/4 or 1/5 nightly is not gonna get him called up.. he's hitting .191 despite 5 Hr's, 14 RBI's, 2 2B's..

Just hit his 6th off of Dewon Brazelton.. He's hitting .222 with 6 homers and 18 rbi's.. see.. it'd be cool if ppl responded to this.. the man can SMASH A BALL!!! One wonders if he could help the Cardinals.. but he's got some contract status I cant recall!

Nah but the man has a hell of an arm too... He can cover some ground.. nice defensive player.. he's got more aim in the outfield than on the mound, sadly.. Haha..

But yea he started playing CF 2 years ago.. He had like 20 combined homers in A ball and AA.. last year he didnt do much cuz of an injury that stopped him.. he came to spring training.. Everyone saw his potential.. I guess he was one of the best hitters in practice from the whole team and it may translate.. he's slowing bringing up his average and he's cranking some balls right now. I look for that to continue..

The reason why he aint up is gonna be simple.. He's gotta pass through waivers if he gets called up and sent back down and some team will take a chance on him!! So I suppose that's why he isnt up right now but I swear he could help the offense!! I do look for him up in September possibly!

Ankiel to DL

Quote:
Ankiel on DL: Outfielder Rick Ankiel has been placed on the disabled list by Triple-A Memphis. Ankiel, hitting .281 with nine homers and 31 RBIs, is battling an Achilles tendon injury. The Triple-A DL can be only a seven-day assignment, so the move doesn't necessarily mean Ankiel will be sidelined for an extended period.
Thats the problem with Rick.. he's injury prone.. but there's no denying his hot start.. hope this doesnt derail it and he returns and can still do what he was doing! Sounds decent that it's not too bad but never know..

Ankiel's move to hitter works

Former pitcher at Greer tonight

By MAURICE PATTON
Staff Writer

After rocketing through the minor leagues as an up-and-coming pitcher — and crashing and burning in the 2000 postseason — Rick Ankiel is trying to make it back to the majors by hitting rockets.

The former St. Louis Cardinals' mound phenom is progressing toward a return by putting up solid offensive statistics as an outfielder with the Triple-A Memphis Redbirds, who open a four-game series against the Nashville Sounds tonight at Greer Stadium.

A stint on the disabled list with an injured left Achilles tendon temporarily slowed Ankiel's first Triple-A campaign as a full-time hitter. But his nine home runs are tied for the fourth-best mark in the Pacific Coast League and his 31 RBIs are tied for sixth. He's also posted a .281 batting average in 33 games.

"The biggest thing for me is to stay healthy and be consistent," Ankiel, the 72nd overall selection in the 1997 draft, said recently. "I'm having trouble with that. But it's been fun. I'm learning to hit every day, I'm becoming consistent, I'm putting up decent numbers. I'm happy."

Memphis leads 6-3 in the 6th

But look at Rick Ankiel.. in his first 3 at bats.. 2 homers and a double.. thats homers 10 and 11 and his rbi's jumped to 39 from 34! Hope he's recovered now!

He went 1/4 with a RBI yesterday in a 2-0 win!
