Default Tornadoes bolster staff, sign two pitchers

Worcester, MA - The Worcester Tornadoes have announced that they have come to terms with right-handed pitchers John Birtwell and D.J. Mattox on contracts for the 2007 season.

Birtwell, 27, has put up extremely impressive numbers in his professional career. A Harvard University graduate and 1999 Ivy League Pitcher of the Year, Birtwell has compiled a 13-12 record and a sparkling 2.80 Earned Run Average in 207 games during six seasons in the Tigers and Athletics systems. Birtwell reached as high as the AAA level in 2006 with Sacramento of the Pacific Coast League, where he appeared in 24 games and posted a 3.38 ERA. Birtwell has struck out 295 batters (while walking just 83) in 276 career innings, for a stellar 9.62 Ks/9 IP ratio.

Mattox, 26, has been re-signed by the Tornadoes after spending the 2006 season as a member of the team's starting rotation. A former Mets top prospect and Reds 40-man roster member, Mattox overcame two Tommy John ligament replacement surgeries to pitch a full, healthy '06 campaign with Worcester. Mattox sports a 32-31 career record and a 3.87 ERA in five pro seasons. In 97 games (90 starts), he has struck out 415 batters in 486 innings pitched (7.69 Ks/9 IP).

The signings of Birtwell and Mattox bring the number of Tornadoes players under contract for the 2007 season to 21. All Tornadoes players will report to Worcester on Friday, May 11 for physicals at St. Vincent's Hospital. The first full-squad workout will take place the following day, on Saturday, May 12 at 9am.

Default Winter baseball clinics hit home run

Worcester, MA - The Worcester Tornadoes and the Shrewsbury Parks and Recreation Department have successfully wrapped up the first Tornadoes Baseball Clinics of 2007. The interest and participation in the February clinics was so impressive, the Tornadoes plan on launching a similar clinic during the third week of April.

The February clinics provided 64 kids with a week's worth of immersion in a number of baseball fundamentals. Focal points included throwing, fielding, hitting, baserunning and the importance of showing good sportsmanship and being a good teammate. Tornadoes Manager Rich Gedman and Third Base Coach Dave Smith oversaw the clinics, with help from Pitching Coach Bobby Ojeda and Tornadoes players Chris Colabello, Bobby Tewksbary, Jeff LaHair, Keith Beauregard, Reid Willett and Mike Meagher.

"The reaction was outstanding from both kids and parents," said Tornadoes Third Base Coach and Director of Community Affairs Dave Smith. "The kids learned the basics of baseball and had a great time along the way and those are our two main objectives in the clinics. I think I speak for all the Tornadoes coaches and players when I say I look forward to doing it again in April."

The April clinics will be held at Dean Park in Shrewsbury, with each day divided into two sessions. The morning session, for children ages 6-9 years old, will run from 8:30am-11:30am. The afternoon session for children ages 10-12, will take place from noon-3:00pm. Both sessions run from Tuesday-Friday, April 17-20, 2007. Similar to the February clinics, the April clinics will concentrate on strengthening baseball fundamentals and will be staffed by Gedman, Smith, and a number of Tornadoes Players and coaches.

For more information regarding the specifics of the Worcester Tornadoes Baseball Clinics, please contact Dave Smith at dsmith@worcestertornadoes.com or call the Tornadoes office at (508) 792-2288. To register for the April clinics, please contact the Shrewsbury Parks and Recreation Department at (508) 841-8503.

Worcester Tornadoes 2007 season tickets, Mini Paks, Flex-Paks, group tickets and picnic outings are now available. For more information, call the Tornadoes office at (508) 792-2288 or visit the Tornadoes website at worcestertornadoes.com: HOME.
