Default Ducks want your old sneakers

(Central Islip, N.Y., Dec. 11, 2006) - Long Island Ducks team officials today announced they have once again joined Keep Islip Clean in their efforts to recycle used sneakers for Nike's "Reuse-A-Shoe" program. From Tuesday, January 2 through January 31, the Citibank Park executive offices will act as a drop-off point, during normal business hours, for all used sneakers that do not contain metal.

"Our organization is proud to be able to assist in this important program," says Ducks principal owner Frank Boulton. "As the years pass, the importance of recycling grows and we hope that Ducks fans with old sneakers will be able to bring their old unwanted sneakers to the ballpark to help out this great cause."

Nike's Reuse-A-Shoe was founded in 1993, when they began collecting both post-consumer, non-metal containing athletic shoes of any brand, and Nike shoes that were returned due to a material or workmanship flaw. The footwear is then separated, ground up and recycled for use in materials that build new sports surfaces, gear, padding and shoes. Since inception, the program has donated more than 170 sports surfaces to disadvantaged communities around the world while helping the environment, as thousands of pairs of athletic materials have been diverted from landfills.

The Long Island Ducks' wide-reaching involvement in the community has been growing since the team's inception in 2000. For further information, please visit Long Island Ducks Official Site or call the public relations department at (631) 940-3825.

Default Herr to manage for Washington Nationals organization

LANCASTER, Pa.-Tom Herr, the manager of the Lancaster Barnstormers since the team's inaugural season in 2005, has accepted a position to manage in the Washington Nationals organization, the Barnstormers announced today. Herr's first assignment will be to manage the Nat ionals' single-A affiliate in Hagerstown, Md., next season.

The Barnstormers have simultaneously announced that, on the recommendation of Herr, popular third base coach and minor league baseball coaching veteran Frank Klebe has been named the team's second manager. Team president Jon Danos made the announcements today during a press conference at Clipper Magazine Stadium attended by Herr, Klebe and front office personnel.

Herr, a native of Lancaster who played 13 seasons in the Major Leagues and appeared in two World Series' with the St. Louis Cardinals, will take the next step in his pursuit of managing in the Major Leagues.

"It has been an honor to manage in my hometown and to be a part of delivering a championship to Lancaster," Herr said. "Since my playing days ended, I have dreamed of managing in the big leagues and, although it will be difficult to leave such a class organization and incredible personal circumstances, this is what I must do to achieve my dream."

"A big part of our job is to assist our on-field personnel in returning to the Major Leagues," Danos said. "In just two years, 10 players from our team have been purchased by Major League organizations. Now it is Tom's turn. We have always believed that Tom could achieve a high level of success as a manager."

Klebe will lead the Barnstormers as they defend their Atlantic League championship in only their third season. Klebe has been a manager or coach in the minor leagues for eight years, and he managed the Philadelphia Phillies' single-A affiliate in Batavia, N.Y. from 1998-2001, making two playoff appearances.

"It's an honor to lead the Barnstormers given the team's high standard for success and to follow in the footsteps of a baseball man who I believe will one day manage in the big leagues," Klebe said. "Defending a championship is not easy, and we have a lot of preparation work to do before spring training opens in Lakeland, Fla. My coaching staff and I will work hard to keep the title here in the Lancaster community."

Klebe joined Tom Herr's staff in Lancaster during the 2005 season.

"The club is in very good hands with Frank," Herr said. "He played a major role in our team's achievements and I expect him to carry on with the success. He deserves it."

Additionally, Danos said, "We are delighted to provide Frank with this opportunity. He is incredibly positive and hard working, knows our players well and has great leadership qualities."

The Barnstormers have begun to assemble their roster for next season and are preparing for the Atlantic League All-Star Game on July 11, which will be held at Clipper Magazine Stadium, during the league's tenth anniversary season.

Default Wayne Krenchicki named Bears manager

NEWARK, NJ - December 12, 2006 - The Newark Bears Professional Baseball Club announced they have named former major league infielder Wayne Krenchicki as the club's new Field Manager for the 2007 season. Krenchicki becomes the fifth manager in the history of the Bears franchise.

"Wayne Krenchicki brings knowledge of the game and a successful managerial background to the Bears," said Bears General Manager John Brandt. "We are pleased to announce his hiring and look forward to a victorious 2007 season."

Krenchicki has managed every season in the Atlantic League since it's inception in 1998, including the past six seasons with the Camden Riversharks. During his time in the Atlantic League, the former Ewing, New Jersey high school standout, has become the second winningest manager in the league history with 560 victories. He led the Riversharks to the Atlantic League's best record each season from 2002 through 2005, and was voted as the league's Manager of the Year in 2002.

While with Camden, the University of Miami graduate won 70 or more games four times and brought the Riversharks to the playoffs three times, including a trip to the finals in 2004. Krenchicki (899-881) is one win shy from his 900th as a manager, which in addition to the Atlantic League, includes stints in the Arizona, Midwest, Texas-Louisiana, and Northern Leagues.

Originally drafted by the Baltimore Orioles in the first round, seventh overall, of the 1976 draft, Krenchicki enjoyed an eight year major league career with the Orioles, Cincinnati Reds, Detroit Tigers, and Montreal Expos. He appeared in 90 games or more five times including a career high 110 in 1983. A career .266 hitter, Krenchicki had 283 hits with 44 doubles, five triples, 15 home runs, and 124 RBI.

While with the University of Miami, Krenchicki led the Hurricanes in 1975 with a .355 batting average, 32 stolen bases, and 47 RBI. He is currently tied for eighth place in the all-time Hurricanes record book with 11 triples. Krenchicki was elected to the University of Miami Sports Hall of Fame in 1989.

"I am very excited about the opportunity to manage the Newark Bears," said Krenchicki. "I look forward to the challenge of taking a group of guys and guide them to work together as a team and bring a winning tradition back to Newark. Also, being from New Jersey, it's always exciting to coach in front of my friends and family."

The Newark Bears will begin their ninth season at Bears & Eagles Riverfront Stadium on Tuesday, May 8 against the Bridgeport Bluefish. Fans attending all home games may park in the spacious parking garage located over the wall in right field. For more information and up-to-date news on the Bears, log on to the team's official website Newark Bears or call 1-866-55-4BEAR.
