Colts continue to wheel and deal over winter
The San Angelo Colts announced today that they have traded outfielder J.J. Sherrill to the Reno Silver Sox of the Golden Baseball League for two players to be named later. "J.J. is a great kid with a great attitude, and this opportunity gives him a chance to play close to home with several teams in the Golden Baseball League located in California," said Colts Manager Doc Edwards referring to Sherrill being from Seaside California. One of the Parks he will be playing will be Tony Gwynn Stadium home of the San Diego Surfdogs. Coincidently Sherrill works out with Tony Gwynn during the off-season.
Sherrill a former Indians prospect was originally drafted by the tribe in the 23rd round in 1998. J.J. made it as high as AA before joining San Angelo last season. Sherrill was part of two championship teams first the Kinston Indians who won the Carolina League title in 2004 (winning 100 games in a 140 game schedule) and Akron who won the Eastern League title in 2005.
Sherrill who missed spring training joined San Angelo a month into the season. After starting out slow, he shook off the rust and really turned it on down the stretch. After hitting just .239 in June and July he went 23 for his last 64 (.359) and in August hit .352 (25-71) and ended season with a 9 game hitting streak going 14-31 (.452) and hit in 11 straight including playoffs 17-40 (.425). In the playoff series against Alexandria, he went 3-9 (.333) with an RBI.
Sherrill, a switch-hitter, possessed a cannon for an arm, and possessed great speed, stealing 15 bases while only being caught twice. On the season, J.J. hit .274 with 6 homeruns and 32 RBIs.
