Arizona Winter League Adds Cory Snyder and Ozzie Virgil, Jr.
(Yuma, AZ. December 7, 2006) The Arizona Winter League (AWL) today announced the addition of former major league stars Ozzie Virgil, Jr. and Cory Snyder to the slate of instructors and coaches that will be working with the players at the winter instructional league set to begin in mid-January.
"Ozzie and Cory bring incredible experience and teaching skills to the Arizona Winter League," said AWL Commissioner Kevin Outcalt. "In addition, they both have tremendous connections with major league organizations and will provide player references to scouting personnel from all leagues."
Virgil, a two-time MLB All-Star as a catcher with the Atlanta Braves and Philadelphia Phillies will be the primary catching instructor during the first week of workouts prior to Opening Night on January 19th. He will then manage and coach throughout the one month season. Snyder, who played 9 seasons in the major leagues and twice finished in the Top Ten in Home Runs, will be a hitting and outfield instructor during the first week of workouts. He will return later in the season to evaluate and sign players to contracts for his St. George Roadrunners team that is set to play in the Golden Baseball League season in the summer.
Former major league players that are now set to work in the AWL as managers or instructors include: Mike Marshall, Darrell Evans, Garry Templeton, Les Lancaster, Ozzie Virgil Jr., and Cory Snyder. Additional instructors and coaches representing teams from the Northern League, the American Association, the New York State League, the South Coast League, the Frontier League, and the Can-Am League will be working with and evaluating players. Scouts representing the Mexican League, the Liga Norte Sonora, the Taiwan League, the Korean League, the Colombia Winter League, and a number of major league teams have also requested credentials for evaluation purposes.
"This is a great opportunity for players to improve and demonstrate their skills and receive contracts for the 2007 GBL season and a number of other U.S. and international professional leagues," said AWL Commissioner Kevin Outcalt. "In addition to playing for these managers with a chance to be signed, we have already been contacted by major league organizations that plan to scout the league as well. Like the GBL, the AWL will actively market our top players to MLB teams and we plan to duplicate the success of player placement we have had in the summer."
Players will report on January 14th with four days of training before the teams are drafted and the opening night game kicks off the season on Friday, January 19th. Two games a day will be run with full minor league activities including game day promotions, fan giveaways, entertainment acts, mascots, full concessions, etc. All statistics will be reported to the league's official statistician, Howe SportsData.
