Lynx game to be site for twist on record breaking

Ottawa - There have been plenty of record-breaking nights at Lynx Stadium over the years, but the Ottawa Lynx are hoping this one has a twist-ed ending. The Lynx home game Thursday, August 17th against Buffalo will play host to an attempt at the Guinness World Record™ for the world's largest dancing of the twist in the Tropicana Twist-er World Record Attempt, presented by Tropicana Twister and Hot 89.9.

After the game, August 17th, fans are invited to go down onto the Lynx Stadium field to help dance Ottawa into the record books.

Tropicana will provide samples of Tropicana Twister for our thirsty dancers as well as other prizes throughout the game. Fred Astaire Dance Studio will have two dancers on-site to show everyone the correct way to do the twist and will also provide a $500 gift certificate for dance lessons for one lucky Lynx fan. Hot 89.9 will provide the music and get the attempt underway with Chubby Checker's "The Twist."

To make the record official, two prominent and respected members of the community have to witness this event. So CTV Ottawa personality Max Keeping and Ottawa city councillor Jacques Legendre will be on hand to make this world record attempt count.

A total of 1,691 staff and pupils from St Aidan's Church of England High School and St. John Fisher Catholic High School from Harrogate, North Yorkshire, UK, danced the twist for five minutes on April 30th, 2004. Gather your friends and family and let's make history at Lynx Stadium!

Default Franklin Gutierrez Recalled to Cleveland

The Cleveland Indians today announced that they have recalled outfielder Franklin Gutierrez from the Buffalo Bisons. The move was made shortly after the Tribe completed a trade with Cincinnati that sent outfielder Todd Hollandsworth to the Reds.

The Indians received a player to be named later in the deal.

Gutierrez, 23, has spent most of the 2006 with the Herd with a .281 (90-32) average, seven home runs and 32RBI in 83 games. He led the team with 26 doubles while his 58 runs scored were second only to Ben Francisco (64). His was 12 of 19 in stolen base attempts and has appeared in 56 games in centerfield, 14 games in left and eight games in right.

This is Gutierrez's second stint with the Indians this year, as he batted .258 (17-66) with 11 runs scored, four doubles and four RBI in 20 games from June 16 - July 12.

Signed during the off season, Hollandsworth batted .237 (37-156) with 12 doubles, a triple, six home runs and 27RBI in 56 games this year with the Indians.

Default Wings Win Thanks to Late Rally

Tied 3-3, the Red Wings scored one run in the seventh and two in the eight to defeat the Pawtucket Red Sox 6-3 Wednesday in a weekday game at Frontier Field. Chris Heintz drove in two runs for Rochester. After the game, RHP Boof Bonser was called up to Minnesota after LHP Francisco Liriano was placed on the disabled list.

With lefty Jason Miller on the mound, the Paw Sox got on the board early. Miller had recorded four fly-outs by the second inning, but Willie Harris hit a home run over the right field fence to give the Sox a 1-0 lead.

The Sox tacked on another run in the top of the third. Trent Durrington reached on a fielder's choice and stole second. Dustin Pedroia popped up to Tommy Watkins, who was unable to catch the ball. Durrington came around to score and the Sox took a 2-0 lead.

The Red Wings closed the gap in the bottom of the third. Alex Romero and Luis Maza led off the inning with back-to-back singles. Watkins grounded into a fielder's choice and Lew Ford hit an infield single to load the bases. Quinton McCracken grounded out to the second basemen to score Maza, making the score 2-1.

Durrington singled and stole his second base of the game as the Paw Sox added another run in the top of the fifth. Jeff Bailey singled to drive in Durrington to give the Sox a 3-1 lead.

McCracken and Terry Tiffee led off the bot! tom of the sixth to get the offense going for the Wings. Kevin West had an RBI single and Chris Heintz had an RBI ground out to third to tie the game at 3.

With Boston reliever Keith Foulke on to pitch the seventh inning as part of his rehab assignment with Pawtucket, Maza led off with a triple to the power alley in left-centerfield, and scored on Watkins' RBI sacrifice fly to center. Ford followed with a double off Foulke (0-1), and the Wings nearly had another run - if not for a great play by second baseman Willie Harris, who leaped high to take a hit away from McCracken and then doubled up Ford at second to end the inning.

Rochester picked up insurance runs off Javier Lopez in the eighth inning. Garrett Jones was on first after a single and, with two outs, Heintz' RBI double to center field plated Jones. When Romero singled to center on the next play, Heintz hustled home from second and made a perfect slide to beat a near-perfect throw and make it 6-3 Red Wings.

Miller, who got the starting nod after scheduled starter Matt Garza was called up to the Twins Tuesday, tossed six fine innings. He scattered six hits, allowed three runs (two earned) and walked one while fanning five. Equally impressive was Kevin Cameron, who rebounded from a rough outing Monday (1/3 inning, four runs). Cameron took over in the seventh and retired the first eight batters he faced until Ken Huckaby doubled in the ninth - breaking a streak of four straight strikeouts by Cameron. A pop fly to Romero in left by Alejandro Machado ended the game, giving Cameron (4-3) the decision and the Wings the win.

NOTES: Rochester had scored just 25 runs (2.5 runs per game) in Miller's 10 previous starts and nine of those runs came in his first start.....Tuesday night's 1-0 win vs. Pawtucket was the Red Wings' 13th shutout this season. The 13 shutouts are the most Rochester has had in a season since 1997, when the Red Wings had 13 shutouts. Of the 13 shutouts this year five have come on the road, the most road shutouts for Rochester since 1999... The Red Wings now have a 53-39 record vs. the Paw Sox since 2001. Prior to 2001, Rochester had not won a season series with Pawtucket since 1996.

Default Late rally gives Louisville 6-4 win over Tribe

INDIANAPOLIS -- Louisville scored four times in the top of the seventh to post a 6-4 win over Indianapolis Wednesday afternoon at Victory Field.

The Bats improve to 61-56 on the season, while the Indians fall to 62-54 overall. Indianapolis continues to lead the International League's West Division by one-half game over Toledo, pending the outcome of Wednesday night's Mud Hens-Columbus Clippers game.

The Bats sent eight men to the plate in their big inning. 2B Aaron Herr opened the frame with a walk and moved to second on 3B Earl Snyder's single to left center. Louisville then collected three straight run-scoring, extra-base hits with 1B Jesse Gutierrez hammering an RBI double, RF Matt Kata whacking a two-run triple and C Ryan Jorgensen smoking an RBI double.

Indianapolis trimmed the deficit with a pair of runs in the eighth, but Bats RHP Scott Chiasson (1.1 IP, 1 BB, 2 SO) came in to snag his team-leading 23rd save of the season.

Louisville RHP Tom Shearn (0.2 IP, 1 BB) closed out the sixth and was credited with the win, improving to 7-3. Tribe LHP Sean Burnett (6.0 IP, 6 H, 4 R, 4 ER, 1 BB, 2 SO) was pinned with the loss, falling to 7-9.

Snyder (2-for-3, 2 R, 2 RBI) and Jorgensen (2-for-4, 1 RBI) recorded multi-hit games for the visitors, while C Carlos Maldonado (3-for-5, 1 RBI) and 1B Chris Richard (2-for-2, 2 RBI) managed more than one base knock for the home team.

The clubs traded early scores before the Indians pulled ahead with a run in the sixth. SS J.J. Furmaniak roped a single to right center, went from first to third on a groundout and scored on a throwing error by the Louisville first baseman.

The Bats answered, plating five unanswered runs -- four in the seventh and one in the eighth -- to open up some breathing room.

Indianapolis reached the 10-hit plateau for the 35th time this year (11 hits), but tied a season-high for runners left on base (15).

The Indians, who own the IL's best fielding percentage at .982, also registered their 60th errorless games of the campaign.

The two teams wrap up their four-game "home and home" series Thursday night at 7 p.m. RHP Ryan Vogelsong is scheduled to start for Indianapolis, while LHP Mike Gosling is expected to get the nod for Louisville.

The game will be carried by ESPN-950 AM and IndyIndians.com as Howard Kellman and Scott McCauley have the call. Thursday's pre-game show begins at 6:40 p.m.

Default Braves hold Norfolk to four hits, Tides lose 5-1

August 9, 2006 - The Richmond Braves held Norfolk to four hits, topping the Tides 5-1 in front of 8,469 fans at Harbor Park Wednesday night.

Braves starter Dan Curtis (3-4) pitched 7.0 shutout innings, helping Richmond knock off the Tides for the fifth straight game. The 26-year-old right-hander allowed just three hits and two walks while striking out three, lowering his ERA in August to 0.71.

Richmond jumped out to an early lead off of Norfolk starter Oliver Perez (1-5), as Gregor Blanco led off the game with a walk and came around to score on a home run to left field off the bat of Martin Prado, his second of the season.

The Braves broke the game open with three more runs in the fourth inning, taking advantage of three base hits and three Perez walks to go on top 5-0.

Perez, acquired in a July 31 trade with the Pittsburgh Pirates organization, took the loss after allowing five runs on six hits while walking five and striking out four in 3.2 innings of work.

The Tides bullpen of Tim LaVigne, Jose Lima, Steve Schmoll and Juan Perez kept the Braves off the board the rest of the game, spinning 5.1 innings of shutout relief.
