Default Broadway named BC Powder Southern League Pitcher of the Week

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - Lance Broadway of the Birmingham Barons has been selected as the BC Powder Southern League Pitcher of the Week for the period of July 31st - August 6th, as announced today by the Southern League.

Broadway, a 6'3", 190-lb. right-hander from Grand Prairie, Tex., went 2-0 during starts against the Montgomery Biscuits (July 31st) and the Tennessee Smokies (August 6th) last week. In 13.0 combined innings on the mound, Broadway struck out 10 while allowing just two earned runs. Selected to compete for the South Division in this summer's Southern League All-Star Game, Broadway surrendered just one base on balls last week while improving his season record to 8-7.

Broadway, who also earned BC Powder Southern League Pitcher of the Week accolades earlier this season on May 15th, is currently ranked third and fourth in the Southern League, respectively, in innings pitched (142.1) and ERA (2.72). Broadway leads the Birmingham pitching staff in strikeouts (100), as well.

Selected in the first round (15th overall) of the 2005 First-Year Player Draft by the Chicago White Sox, Broadway was ranked by Baseball America as the #8 Prospect in the White Sox organization prior to the 2006 season. During his first season as a professional (2005), Broadway went 1-3 with a 4.58 ERA in 11 starts at class A Winston-Salem.

The Barons (19-23) will play the fourth game of their current five-game set at the Tennessee Smokies tonight at 6:15 p.m (CDT) in Kodak, Tenn.

Default Montgomery edged by Mississippi, 2-1

MONTGOMERY - 20-year-old lefthander Matt Harrison scattered four hits over six scoreless innings as the Mississippi Braves (19-25, 50-63) eked out a 2-1 victory over the host Montgomery Biscuits (23-21, 59-54).

The Braves won only their fourth game in 19 meetings between the two squads this year, all of which have been decided by three runs or less.

Mississippi broke on top in the third inning when Luis Hernandez lined a two-out RBI single to left off of Montgomery starter Mike Prochaska (2-4).

The following inning, a Josh Burrus bases-loaded sacrifice fly gave Harrison (3-2) and three relievers all the run support they would need.

In the fifth inning, the Biscuits put together their best scoring chance against the 6'5 southpaw. Singles by Reid Brignac and Patrick Breen put runners on first and second with one out. Two batters later, Jeremy Owens stroked a base hit to left field and Brignac rounded third and dashed for home. Josh Burrus' throw to Jarrod Saltalamacchia arrived in time, however, and the Biscuits shortstop was tagged out to end the inning.

In the seventh, Ryan Christianson broke a 45-game homerless drought, touching off a rocket to left-center against reliever Eric Schmitt to bring the Biscuits within 2-1

But Mississippi's Jose Ascanio and Zach Schreiber held Montgomery scoreless over the last two frames, with Schreiber whiffing Evan Longoria and inducing a Brignac groundout with the potential tying run on third to earn his seventeenth save.

Overshadowed in the losing effort was a fine outing from Prochaska, who gave up four hits over six strong innings, recording a season-high seven strikeouts.

The rubber match of the five-game series is scheduled for Tuesday night at 7:05, with Montgomery righthander Mitch Talbot (1-2, 2.52) opposing Braves righthander Sean White (4-4, 4.13).

Default Lookouts defeat Suns 3-2 in ten innings

After being trounced in the past two games, the Lookouts exacted a little revenge tonight as they defeat the Jacksonville Suns 3-2 in 10 innings. Chattanooga's offense got rolling early with two runs in the bottom of the first inning. Chris Dickerson led off with a single and came around to score on a Drew Anderson double. Anderson then moved to third on a passed ball and scored on a single by Joey Votto.

The Suns came back to tie the game at two in the top of the fifth inning. The score remained tied at two until the bottom of the 10th. Joey Votto led off the inning and reached first on a fielding error and then moved to second on a wild pitch. Noochie Varner was then intentionally walked. Jeff Bannon then sacrificed Votto and Varner on a ground ball to third base. With runners on second and third, Anderson Machado was intentionally walked to load the bases. Miguel Perez became the hero with a sacrifice fly to right field to score Votto and win the game.

Lookouts starter Camilo Vasquez earned a no decision after pitching six innings. He scattered eight hits and only allowed two runs. Jon Coutlangus pitched two innings and allowed just two hits. David Shafer came in and pitched the ninth and held the Suns' bats in check. Calvin Medlock earned the victory after pitching the tenth. He allowed two hits and struck out two. Medlock's record now stands at 7-2.

The Lookouts and the Suns will wrap up the series tomorrow night. Homer Bailey will take the hill for the Lookouts against TJ Nall. Gates open at 5:30 and the first pitch is scheduled for 7:15.

Default Suns lose extra inning heartbreaker Monday at Chattanooga

Chattanooga, Tenn. - Chattanooga catcher Miguel Perez drove home the game-winning run on a tenth inning sacrifice fly to right field as the Chattanooga Lookouts defeated the Jacksonville Suns Monday by the final score of 3-2.

With the loss the Suns fell to 74-40 overall and 26-18 in the second half. The Lookouts improved to 68-46 overall and 24-20 in the second half. Chattanooga now leads the season series 10-9 and have tied the current series at two games a piece.

Chattanooga opened the scoring in the first inning with an RBI double from Drew Anderson followed by an RBI single from Joey Votto that put the Lookouts ahead by the score of 2-0.

Jacksonville's offense scattered two hits through the first four innings against Lookouts starter Camilo Vazquez but finally broke through in the fifth inning when Tony Abreu's two-run triple tied the score at 2-2.

Following Chattanooga's first inning runs, Suns starter Danny Muegge settled in while receiving help from his defense in terms of two key double plays to stymie Lookout threats in the fourth and sixth innings.

Jacksonville had an opportunity to take the lead in the ninth inning as the Suns loaded the bases with no outs on Chattanooga closer David Shafer. The next three Suns went down in order, and when the Lookouts went 1-2-3 in the last of the ninth the game went to extra innings.

The Suns had another opportunity in the tenth by loading the bases with one out. The next two batters went down in order against reliever Calvin Medlock to end another scoring threat.

Chattanooga led off the last of the tenth as Tony Abreu misplayed a Joey Votto groundball in short right field. Votto moved to second base on a wild pitch and the Suns walked Noochie Varner. Following Jeff Bannon's sacrifice bunt the Suns walked Anderson Machado to load the bases with one out. Miguel Perez then flied a ball deep enough to right field to score Votto and end the game by the score of 3-2.

Calvin Medlock improved to 7-2 in the victory for Chattanooga while B.J. LaMura fell to 0-1 with the Suns and 5-1 overall between Birmingham and Jacksonville.
