Curve fall short in ninth, lose second straight, 3-2
ALTOONA - The Curve lost their second straight game to the Erie SeaWolves Saturday night, falling 3-2, in front of 7,872 fans at Blair County Ballpark. Knotted at two apiece in the top of the ninth, Erie catcher Danilo Sanchez knocked in the winning run for the SeaWolves with an RBI double. Prior to Saturday's contest, the backstop was 1-for-19 (.053) against Curve pitching this season.
After waiting until the sixth inning to score in Thursday's game, the Curve wasted no time on Friday, and scored before registering an out. Left fielder Nyjer Morgan, who singled to leadoff the first for Altoona, scored on a RBI triple by the shortstop Brian Bixler. It was Bixler's third triple and ninth RBI since joining the Curve on June 29th. The 23-year old finished 3-for-4 on the night.
The SeaWolves would answer right back in the top of the second. After Curve starter Jason Roach walked catcher Sanchez to load the bases, first baseman, Kelly Hunt, drove in Don Kelly with an RBI single to center. Roach escaped further damage after forcing the following batter, Vince Blue, to bounce into the inning-ending 4-6-3 double play.
Simon Pond and Dave Parrish equalized an Erie run in the top of the fourth inning by hitting back-to-back doubles in the bottom of the frame to knot the game at two apiece. Parrish extended his hitting streak to six games and has reached base safely in 13 consecutive contests. During his hit streak, the backstop is 11-for-23 (.478).
Curve reliever Franklin Perez pitched three shutout innings of relief Saturday night, extending his streak of consecutive innings pitched without allowing a run to 18 1/3. It marks the longest consecutive shutout streak of the season. The franchise record for consecutive scoreless innings is 20 1/3, set by Chris Spurling during the 2002 season.
Brandon Knight, the leading closer of the Eastern League, suffered his fourth loss of the year after allowing the game-winning run to score in the top of the ninth.
Erie's Eulogio De La Cruz picked up the win for the SeaWolves, his second on the year. He pitched a shutout ninth inning for Erie, allowing one hit.
Roach received a no-decision for his efforts after pitching five full innings, giving up two runs on six hits. The 30-year old struck out three and walked two. Friday marked his first start since being sent from Indianapolis (AAA) on Thursday. The right-hander went 2-2 with a 3.54 ERA in 10 games (9 starts) with the Indians.
Saturday night, the Curve continue their unique and innovative Retro Celebrity Series with an appearance by Jerry Mathers, who is best known for his role as "Beaver Cleaver" on the hit show Leave it to Beaver. Left-hander Shane Youman (5-2, 1.57) will get the start for the Curve against Erie's Virgil Vasquez (4-7, 4.00). The first pitch is scheduled for 7:05 p.m.
Great seats are still available for Saturday's game and can be purchased in person at the Blair County Ballpark box office, over the phone by calling the Curve toll-free at 877-99-Curve.

Batista's Big Night Leads To Win For B-Mets
Wilson Batista was 3 for 4 with three RBI and two runs scored, helping the Binghamton Mets to a 4-3 win over the Bowie Baysox at NYSEG Stadium Friday. The win is Binghamton's second straight in the series and 10th in their last 12 games.
Batista opened the scoring in the B-Mets' (44-46) half of the first, hitting a one-out homer off James Johnson for a 1-0 lead. However, Jeff Fiorentino's third-inning sacrifice fly scored Pete Shier with the tying run for Bowie (39-48) before Noah Hall homered in the sixth for a 2-1 lead.
Singles by Batista, Andy Wilson and Michel Abreu loaded the bases with no out for Binghamton in the bottom of the sixth before Carlos Gomez hit a game-tying sacrifice fly that scored Batista. In the seventh, Corey Ragsdale was hit by a pitch before Rashad Eldridge singled with two out, chasing Johnson (8-4). After reliever Jason Pearson balked both runners into scoring position, Batista lined a base hit to left, scoring Ragsdale and Eldridge for a 4-2 B-Mets lead.
Bowie's final run came in the ninth on an Orlando Roman wild pitch that scored Gera Alvarez from third with two outs. Roman held on to get the final out, picking up his first save. Saturday, the B-Mets play the third game of their four-game series against the Bowie Baysox. Miguel Perez (3-4, 4.61) will start for Binghamton against lefthander Eric DuBose (4-0, 1.73) of Bowie. The first pitch is slated for 7:00 at NYSEG Stadium with radio broadcast starting at 6:45 on Newsradio 1290 WNBF.

Defenders busch-whack Sea Dogs in doubleheader sweep
The Connecticut Defenders got back in the win column with a double header sweep of the Portland Sea Dogs up at Portland on Friday, winning 10-4, and 1-0.
In game one, the Defenders got some early help from Jose Vaquedano, whose inability to hit the strike zone led to runs for Connecticut. He began the game issuing back-to-back walks to Quincy Foster and Derin McMains. They both came in to score on a Brian Buscher RBI double. Those were just two of Buscher's five game one RBIs. His second came in the top of the 2nd inning to score Foster, making it a 3-0 game.
The Defenders further bolstered their lead with only one hit in the top of the 4th inning. A hit batsman, an error and three walks led to three runs and a 6-0 lead. To that point, the Defenders scored six runs on three hits, eight walks, and two hit batsmen. Chris Begg had cruised, but let up a mini rally in the bottom of the 4th inning. Two runs scored, but his team got the two runs back in the top of the 5th inning. Brian Buscher added two more runs in the 7th inning on his fifth home run of the year. Portland scored two in the bottom of the inning, but Chris Begg finished out the complete game for a 10-4 win, his eighth of the year.
Game two was nothing like the game before with Jason Waddell and Scott Shoemaker on the mound. The two held the teams scoreless through the first three innings, but the Defenders began a small rally in the 4th inning with none other than Brain Buscher. For an encore, Buscher ripped a one out double and came around to score on a Travis Ishikawa RBI single, making the score 1-0.
Waddell exited the game after four scoreless innings. He allowed just three singles and a walk in that time period before giving way to Scott Munter. Munter was solid through two innings of work, allowing only a single and a hit batsman. Still leading 1-0 into the bottom of the 7th inning, the Defenders turned to All Star closer Billy Sadler, who allowed a couple of base runners, but successfully held the Sea Dogs off the scoreboard for his 13th save of the year.
On Saturday the Defenders will try to make it three straight wins with right-hander Garrett Broshuis (4-7) on the mound. He will be opposed by another righty, Devern Hansack (4-3). The first pitch is scheduled for 6:20.
