The Twins' Johan Santana, who starts today against the Chicago White Sox in the Metrodome, is in a two-pitcher race with Toronto's Roy Halladay for the American League's Cy Young Award. Although the two have performed similarly, Santana probably would win if the season ended today.
Santana and Halladay, who starts today against Baltimore, have each pitched 177 innings. Santana is 14-5 with a 3.10 earned-run average in 26 games. Halladay is 15-3 with a 3.20 ERA in 25 games.
But Santana has allowed only 145 hits while striking out 187. Halladay has allowed 174 hits while striking out 102.
Santana won the Cy Young Award in 2004, Halladay in 2003.
