What are the Brewers doing to improve the club this offseason? Things seem pretty quiet.
-- Russ F., Beloit, Wis.
To some degree, the Brewers are stuck circling CC Sabathia, but mostly it's because the entire market is in a bit of a standstill, waiting for the top free-agent pitcher -- Sabathia -- and the consensus top hitter -- Mark Teixeira -- to sign. This is the way it usually unfolds, slowly at first, and then once the top dogs pick their new teams, other things begin to happen.
A few trades have gone down and a handful of free agents have signed, but it seems like things will remain mostly quiet until the Winter Meetings in two weeks. As I have written, the Brewers are essentially in "CC or bust" mode at the moment, though general manager Doug Melvin has his people brainstorming trade ideas. Melvin says he has had some preliminary contact with other, lower-tier free agents. I don't expect the Brewers to pull the trigger on anything until they sign Sabathia, or he ends up going to another team.
