MILWAUKEE -- Up-and-coming Brewers infielder Bill Hall will be honored on the field Wednesday for the work he has been doing off it.
Hall is the team's nominee for the 2006 Roberto Clemente Award, presented annually to the Major League Baseball player who best exemplifies the game of baseball, sportsmanship, community involvement and the individual's contribution to his team. A winner will be selected from the 30 nominees during the World Series.
"I always like to give back," said Hall, who grew up in a working-class family in Nettleton, Miss. "You try to give the kids as many opportunities as possible to be successful. I don't know if I'll win [the overall award] but it's great to be one of the nominees."
Hall is active in the Boys & Girls Club of Milwaukee, as well as Major League Baseball's Reviving Baseball in Inner Cities (RBI) initiative. Hall and teammates Prince Fielder and Rickie Weeks have taken particular interest in the RBI program, which targets African-American boys from the ages of 13-15 and assembles teams for regional tournaments.
